Fresh Install Chmod Files & Subfolders?

Hi,

I moved my attachments, downloads & templates_c to root directory, chmod them to 777

Should I chmod all files and folders inside these 3 folders?
The templates look kind of plain html, white pages.
I must have messed up somewhere as links seem dead also.

Then edit configuration.php and added:

$templates_compiledir = "/home/me/templates_c/";

$attachments_dir = "/home/me/attachments/";

$downloads_dir = "/home/me/downloads/";

?>

Actually..

I have to start over, the whole installation just vanished after setup.. db gone too.. strange happenings.
