Custom Import Script

Hi Guys,
I want to make a custom import script for my current custom billing system into WHMCS.
I dont want to use WHMCS services because they gave me an estimate (after a week of back and forward emailing) and
1) They are too expensive
2) They are going to take too long to make it

My question is as follows:
Do I have to use the WHMCS API to insert clients/invoices/etc or can I just manually insert my data into the DB?

I cant imagine the API doing anything special in terms of clients/invoices/products?
I want to insert it manually because, for example, I cannot specify a client id with the Add Client API call and I want to maintain my client id's and such as this is what clients use as payment references when making manual bank transfers; as well as other reasons.

I've dealt with a few different type of import operations.. What are you importing from?
