Show only my tasks

There seems to be a very odd setup at the moment whereby the only time you can see and open tasks is when the entire project is assigned to you

this is of no use as i have to give everyone full access to all the projects they are involved in so they can assign it to themselves when they need to open task specifics.

i was hoping i was just being stupid but i cant find a way around this.

please tell me im wrong.
