If you want to just be able to use https in your url. Then $50.00 is not a good deal at all. If you have signed up for an enom account under WHMCS. Then you can purchase a cert for less than $20.00 that will do the job. You'll have to install it. But if you can read, you can do it.

Thank you Roger. Yeah I saw the one from Enom, I will do that. Thanks. Hostgator will install it for $10 they said. There is no way we can install it by ourselves on their server, is that right, or there is a way?

I'm not familiar with HostGator. If you're speaking of installing a cert on your domain that is on a shared hosting server at HostGator. Depends on the control panel. With cPanel the you can generate the CSR that is required for the cert and also install the cert.

If you have a low experience level with such things. The $10.00 install fee may be worth it.

    Good luck..

You can't install it yourself if you are on a HG shared or reseller package as you don't have root WHM access. You will need a VPS or dedicated account to be able to self install.

Thats good enough reason to not be using them. Take the controls out of your control panel then charge you extra for doing what those very controls are for.

@tanya7zhou, if I were you. I'd find another reseller that doesn't want to get into your pocket when you need to do basic tasks with your account.

Does the $50 include the dedicated ip. If you don't already have a dedicated ip you will need one before you can install a cert.

I don't think HG are being unreasonable by preventing normal shared hosting clients from installing ssl. Installing ssl can be done wrong in so many ways by the client and in extreme cases break apache. I would not allow clients to install ssl as most of the time it results in a support ticket anyway so you may aswell install it for them. I don't charge though for the install.

I think charging is unreasonable ! but given cpanels past history with installing ssl from cpanel I would rather do the installs for them and make sure it is all working. I can't speak for other control panels .

I suppose it depends on personal experience and the type of clients you have. Most of my clients are very good and rarely submit tickets, however most would have no idea how to generate the correct csr and install the cert without help.

The only way that you can install a ssl on shared hosting is if you purchase a dedicated IP but Hostgator does not offer dedicated IP's on their shared hosting.(Yes you can have a dedicated IP on shared for a small additional fee per month)
