Template mod

I just changed my header template and uploaded it. Now the whole site is blank I even tried uploading the backup header and still no luck. Any ideas?

You probably didn't close a tag in the header.tpl or the footer.tpl or have <script type="text/javascript"></script> that needs to be tagged with {literal}{/literal}.

what templates should I edit? The ones in the templates_c or the ones in the templates folder? Sorry to sound like an ediot but I am kind of new to this.
