I want to pass the qty on hand per item to show on my site before they order. I'm no php programer so any help would be greatfull

Where do you need this to show as if you has "Stock Control" Enable in the Products/Services setting page then the stock on hand will show as long as you have the updated / none customised the orderforms/products.tpl.

and to see what you can use in the page put this {debug} in the code of products.tpl and then run the page and a list will show.
