VPS Order Process

I'm new to all this VPS stuff so please excuse the noob question.

When ordering a VPS package the customer is asked for "Server Hostname". What is this supposed to be? Is it whatever they want?

I'm pretty sure it's the hostname that the user wants their server to have.

Yes, just like with a dedicated server, a VPS can have its own name.
The first part of the hostname is the name or identification which you give to that server, the second part if the domain name.

So for example, if you want to call your server "Alpha" then the hostname would be alpha.yourdomain.com

The technical name for it is the "third level" domain.
third.second.top (name.domain.com)

They have to be able to point that to the IP on the VPS or server, so typically they need to own the actual domain.

Yup, the hostname is mainly kind of like a subdomain but not, its a way that major DC people sell there servers lets you be able to host more servers with them with the same domain name for the box.

Like you can have as many as you want with say domain.com if thats your domain you just when you signup use idk.domain.com change idk to a server label kind of like eastcost.domain.com meaning this server is your east cost server or you can do what ever you wish to let you know what server it is so its easyer to go and remember what you have on the box. This is a great way most DCs have there stuff setup ..
